I haven't done it since but the knowledge I gained during that time is a tool I can use whenever I want to bulk or cut. I counted every calorie I took in for 6 months. It'll seem too tedious at first, but after doing it for a few months you start to learn about how much calories are in certain foods and how much food will result in weight maintenance vs gains. This requires you to track your calories for a while, figure out your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) and add a small amount for each day (e.g., an extra 200 or 300 calories). The only way to make steady gains is to consciously take control of your caloric intake. Same with reverse dieting, if you stuff your face too much for a day or two then you'll eventually skip a few meals some other time. With dieting if you try to eat way too little then your hunger will overcompsate and you'll eventually binge to make up for it. The problem of both is that your body has a preset baseline that it will want to keep over time, so your weight stays the same. You need a slight caloric surplus over time instead of deficit. Reverse dieting or gaining weight is just the opposite process of losing it. Right now I'm really sluggish, can't wait to get going again. So while exercise doesn't make me lose weight, it significantly improves my health and mobility, and supports my change in diet. "You just did 50 laps in the pool, are you sure you want that piece of cake?" The exercise suppresses my hunger to some degree and makes me mindful of what I eat. And while I will have to change my diet, I find that for me, exercising regularly makes it easier to change. They have a pool so I'll start swimming regularly again, which is great for my joints. I signed up a gym right before Germany went into lockdown. But muscle tone is crucial to keeping me mobile and out of the wheelchair. I have EDS, I can't do too much in the way of weights like I used to. Your clogged arteries will not thank you. And while losing weight is simple, calories in versus out, you're just setting yourself up for an early heart attack when you continue eating junk food all the time.
